Welcome to The Exceptional Families Network

September 08, 2008:

ExceptionalFamilies.Net - Transforming Isolation Into Community
This online collaborative effort is comprised of parents, grandparents, guardians, therapists, teachers, advocates, attorneys and organizational representatives. We welcome all diagnoses and different abilities where there is a want or need for support. Because so many issues cross the barriers of diagnoses, families with children having lesser known, represented or supported medical diagnoses find a plethora of information and networking opportunities.  Whether the diagnosis is Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Bipolar Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Fragile-X, Fetal Alcohol, ADD/ADHD, Kabuki Syndrome, Tourette Syndrome, Williams, or any other label, we understand and are here to help. There is a lot of great energy and caring and the fact is - we just understand. We started with a few parents in a coffee shop and now we have expanded into the online realm where families from across the globe can connect, learn and find the assistance they need.

If you are interested in starting a local support group in your area or finding one near you please contact us at (360) 507-0944 or info@wyattshouse.org. Otherwise, feel free to join us at our Olympia, WA meetings! The benefits are plenty!

So sit back, plug in and join us, won't you?  LOG IN -or- JOIN our online community, A Community Outreach Program of The Wyatt Holliday Foundation

Raw & Live Nutrition (WyattsMom)
posted Sun March 23rd @ 7:34 PM

Something not very well known in the Autism community, or in the community in general, is the amazing improvements in health which can come from simply eating raw foods.  No - not meat and eggs and the like!  I mean fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds - raw vegan nutrition.  That sounds a bit boring, but if you delve into this up-and-coming trend I believe you will see the endless possibilities to help improve your child's health and even chelate heavy metals naturally.

In 2006 I commenced on a journey into the realm of raw and was amazed to find what a horrible dairy intolerance I had!  Not only that, but after going about 80% raw for 3 months, I dropped 30 lbs. without even seriously attempting exercize or swallowing pills!  I was able to think more clearly and process thoughts faster.  I had a lot more energy and was in general happier.  Alas, after falling off the band wagon, I am once again going raw and hope to have my health back by March 2009! Obesity Makes Asthma Worse
(Mon, 08 Sep 2008 11:57:17 GMT)

Obese people with asthma are nearly five times more likely than their non-obese peers to be hospitalized for the ailment. The findings come from a study of more than 1,000 members of a healthcare organization. Compared with normal weight subjects, obese individuals were 2.7 times more likely to have poor asthma control, and 4.6 times more likely to have a history of asthma-related hospitalization. The take-home message of this study, said study co-author Dr. Michael Schatz, "is that obese people with asthma need to be followed more carefully because it's harder to control their asthma, so they are more likely to end up in the hospital."

Could Acupuncture Improve Your Fertility?
(Mon, 08 Sep 2008 11:57:12 GMT)

When Rebecca Killmeyer experienced a miscarriage during her second pregnancy, she wasn't sure if she would ever have another baby. But then she decided to enter a study testing the impact of acupuncture on women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)."To our great surprise we were blessed with a third pregnancy during the PCOS study," said Killmeyer. "I'm absolutely certain the acupuncture treatments helped me ovulate regularly, which allowed me to become pregnant."PCOS causes a hormonal imbalance that interferes with ovulation and fertility. Acupuncture could be an important alternative, non-drug therapy for women with this disorder.
